“Don’t chew on that!” Easter toxins every pet parent should be aware of!

It’s Easter! Time for Easter baskets and Easter lilies! It is also time to remind all of our pet parents about things to be careful about around your pets this Easter season.

We all may know that chocolate is bad for dogs, but it bears repeating. Chocolate eggs, chocolate bunnies, and other yummy treats are bound to be in many of our homes in the next few weeks, so remember to keep them out of reach of curious noses.

In addition to chocolate, be aware of any baked goods made with the sugar substitute, xylitol. Xylitol can cause liver damage and dangerous drops in blood sugar.

Also be very careful with any floral arrangements or potted plants you may purchase or receive during the Easter season. Easter lilies can be toxic and even fatal, particularly to cats. Eating 2 or 3 petals or leaves, or even exposure to the pollen/water in the vase, can cause severe kidney damage. Other potentially toxic lily varieties include the Tiger, Day, Rubrum, Dtargazer, Asiatic hybrid, Japanese Show, Red, and Wood Lilies.

Call or bring your pet in right away to a veterinarian if you think they have eaten anything unusual or if they are acting sick (vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea, etc.). In many cases, the faster your pet is seen and therapy is started, the less chance that there will be life-threatening complications.

We want you to enjoy this lovely time of year, so be sure to keep these tips in mind to keep your fur baby safe!
